Empowering the Met Police with Data-Driven Resource Management
"By identifying specific training needs and resource imbalances, the Met Police can now proactively address their staffing issues, ensuring appropriate staffing levels and skills across all boroughs."
Business issue
The Metropolitan Police faced a complex challenge in ensuring adequate staffing levels across London's boroughs. They needed to maintain the right mix of frontline officers and back-office staff, ensure compliance with mandatory training requirements (both one-off and recurring), and address specialised training needs based on individual roles. Their existing learning management system could only track individual training renewals but couldn't analyse this data against desired staffing levels, leaving a significant gap in resource management and compliance reporting. This required extensive manual data processing each month, consuming valuable time and resources.
Our solution
Ipsos developed a comprehensive platform integrating training data, minimum and desired staffing levels, and geospatial data. This automated ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) process drastically reduced manual data manipulation. The platform feeds an interactive Tableau dashboard, providing segmented access based on the organisational hierarchy, from constables to commanders. This allows for tailored views of staffing and training compliance across different boroughs and operational areas.

Impact
The dashboard rollout to over 7,000 commanders and regional police personnel significantly improved visibility into skill gaps across London. This led to increased uptake of Met Police qualifications and optimised employee utilisation. By identifying specific training needs and resource imbalances, the Met Police can now proactively address these issues, ensuring appropriate staffing and skills across all boroughs. The solution has ultimately enhanced operational efficiency and contributed to better resource allocation for public safety.
